Below is some information that I have put together concerning Texturing Combs, but honestly, if you can imagine a flexible material (Your texture coating) once applied to a well prepared ceiling or wall (ROLLED ON USING A LARGE OR SMALL PAINT ROLLER) & then by running, dabbing or drawing a tool of your choice through the coated surface you will create some sort of design or other, & this is where 'Nifty Tricks n Tips of a Professional Texture Practitioner' guides you into the professional aspect of the Art of Drywall Texturing.

Texturing combs are quite rigid, but are slightly flexible all the same, that is to say, the serrated working edge of the tool is made from a type of plastic.
Sometimes, combs are made in two parts & then put together to create the comb, this is to say, there is a strip of wood which acts as the handle, also, there is a strip, or two, of plastic (which creates the design once drawn through the textured coating) & these plastic (slightly flexible) strips would be inserted through the wooden handle thus creating your comb (please see pictures below!) The standard size come is around 250 mm which is around 10" long, this is ideal to create the initial comb design but is not nessecary because you can use any type of comb to create a pattern!
The serrated working edge of the standard comb is cut out in such a way that once drawn through the texture the pattern style is uniformed! (The same precise gapage between each tooth of the comb)
Also available, or could be cut at home, is a style of comb titled 'rose combs' there are various versions & these are made as described above, but the only difference is the way the edges, (that one would draw through the texture,) has been cut out!
This would obviously create different effects once drawn through the textured coating! Please see the samples below! There are a number of sizes & rose patterns available, just as there are the serrated combs!
One could use a set, of say for instance, 3 combs, one standard 250mm plus two other rose combs that would be smaller than the standard!
One of these rose combs would be shorter than the other, (so that between the set of 3 combs, each on is a couple of inches shorter than the last!
Using a set like these, one could create a manner of effects onto ceilings by using the rose combs to create attractive borders around the perimeter of the ceiling, create flower designs set out at each corner of the ceiling, plus create a manner of attractive centre pieces around the central light fitting of the ceiling!

Sometimes available, although I haven't seen them around lately, is a more sturdier & robust 'all in one plastic moulded' style of comb, which resemble a kind of plastic tile adhesive spreader, but the serrated (the toothed) edge is closer together than that of the tile adhesive spreader to allow for creating a style of design through the texture that resembles that of the 250mm two piece (wooden/plastic) comb as mentioned above!
One word of Warning though! Please do not wash combs out in Hot Water as this will no doubt shrivle up the plastic, serrated working edge, also, store combs away after use as not to break the working serrated edge!
